Job Description

Position Title: Electrical / PCB Design Engineer (Clean Sheet/Motion Control)

Position Description: Protingent Staffing has an exciting contract opportunity for an Electrical / PCB Design Engineer with our client located in Seattle, WA. This role is focused on the clean sheet design and implementation of a motion control system for a next-generation product.

Job Description:

  • We are seeking a Mid to Senior level Electrical / PCB Design Engineer to lead the conception, design, and implementation of a new motion control system.
  • This role requires expertise in system-level architecture, board design, embedded systems, and sensor integration, ensuring a seamless transition from design through manufacturing.
  • This is a clean sheet design and implementation project.

  • The primary function is developing a motion control system for a next-generation product.

  • The system will primarily control Stepper motors, with experience in BLDC control being a strong bonus.

  • Power requirements are relatively small (less than or equal to 100W).

  • The location preference is local and on-site due to the project's hardware nature.

Job Responsibilities:

  • System Architecture & Design: Perform clean sheet design and implementation of the motion control system, focusing on power, control, and signal integrity.
  • Motor Control: Design the control circuitry for the motion system, primarily targeting Stepper motors. Experience with BLDC control is a plus.

  • Embedded Integration: Integrate the motion control PCB with the project's embedded systems, which utilize ST series MCUs and a central host running an NXP iMX6.

  • Sensor Integration: Integrate various sensors typical for motion systems, including limit switches, distance sensors, force sensors, and temperature sensors.

  • PCB Design: Execute all necessary schematic capture and PCB layout for the motion control board.

  • Firmware Interface: While the base job does NOT require firmware development, multidiscipline candidates capable of interfacing with or modifying firmware are highly valued.

Job Qualifications:

  • Experience Level: Proven professional experience (Mid to Senior preferred). Minimum of 1 year in motion control systems is required, with 5+ years of overall experience highly preferred for a senior candidate who can lead the effort from conception.
  • Motion Control Expertise: Deep experience designing and implementing hardware for motor/motion control systems, specifically with Stepper motors.

  • Embedded Systems Foundation: Strong working knowledge of embedded systems, specifically integrating with standard MCUs (such as ST series or similar ARM Cortex M4 derivatives).

  • Sensor Integration: Demonstrated ability to integrate, interface, and design circuitry for various motion control sensors.

  • System Leadership: Ability to drive a project from conception through design and into manufacturing (highly preferred for senior applicants).

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Experience in BLDC (Brushless DC) motor control.
  • Experience with the ST Microcontroller family and/or NXP iMX6 host systems.

  • Ability to read, modify, or write firmware for motion controllers (multidiscipline skill).

Job Details:

  • Job Type: Contract (~4-6 months estimated duration, with potential for extension).
  • Location: Seattle, WA (In-office 3+ days per week preferred. Remote is NOT possible due to the nature of the project and necessary hardware interaction.)

  • Pay Rate Range: $95 – $135 / hour
