Position Title: Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Position Description: Our Eastside client is looking for Opto-Mechanical Engineers. Special consideration for  candidates with  high volume, optics development experience.  

Responsibilities:
  • Design subsystems that require integration of mechanical and optical components
  • Design optical mechanical systems; including fixtures, mounting, and optical models to support rest of ME product team
  • Design high tolerance opto-mechanical parts & subassemblies for use in a commercial, high volume, mobile consumer product
  • Clarify and define optics requirements and translate those into mechanical requirements, including understanding sensitivities and impacts
  • Collaborate with partners (especially Optics Engineering, ID, and other Mechanical engineers) to design and integrate subsystem
  • Design high tolerance mounting/housing system to maintain alignment of integrated optical components
  • Define and analyze the mechanical tolerances and stability of optical assemblies
  • Develop high volume assembly processes for subassembly which enables required alignment tolerances
  • Assess reliability and risks of design to meet optical goals and overall cost and performance requirements
  • Drive definition of mechanical calibration requirements required for optical system
  • Develop prototypes and fixtures to support evaluation of system and subsystems
  • System level and sub-system design responsibilities in the development of concept explorations and technology investigations
  • Lead innovation and advancements within responsible areas to improve overall device value
  • Create evaluation models and systems to assess performance investigations for various technology components and product features
  • Interface across multiple disciplines (Program Management, Industrial design, Hardware, Component Engineering, RF, Audio, Reliability, Procurement, Manufacturing)
  • Produce CAD and detailed drawings and documentation of mechanical components
  • Provide tactical contribution and technical leadership throughout the conceptual and detail design stages of product development
  • Interface directly with sub-system partners for design of and integration of technology components
  • Assess risks/feasibility of piece part design / features to meet design expectations for cost and reliability
  • Contribute to project planning for development schedules / BOMs to meet all build stages up to production readiness
  • Perform and review detailed analyses for tolerance stacks, FEMs, Reliability tests
  • Participate in tooling vendor selection, and all part qualification
  • Must be willing and able to travel (domestic and international) to support design and manufacturing activities

Required Skills/Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2 years of optical-mechanical design experience, including a strong “ hands on” background with opto-mechanical assemblies
  • Prior experience in designing optical subassemblies, including design of optical mounts (lenses, mirrors, sensors, prisms, windows).   Must be able to show examples
  • Minimum 2 years in CAD, (Prefer Creo Pro/E)
  • Experienced in designing for high volume production, including demonstrated experience in plastic injection molding
  • Experience using adhesives for mounting optical components
  • Experience with complex, tight tolerance opto-mechanical design.   Highly proficient in tolerance analysis of optical systems, including use of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).   Must be able to show examples
  • Experience setting up and running optical tolerance analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Science, Optical Engineering.   M.S. or PhD in related discipline preferred.
